Squats with a rubber band around the knees to push out against...total ass buster of an exercise. And what Dave said.

Yep - lunges kick ass (pun intended) especially if you do them onto a raised platform to increase the range of movement.

Re the raised platform for lunges, would you face down the platform or up? I'd imagine having the leading leg raised would make the exercise easier so I assume you mean facing down. Hope you can clarify.

Weighted lunges stepping down from a platform is what works best for me.

By lunging onto (or off of as the previous post mentioned) a raised platform of say 4-6" you increase the range of movement that is possible because the floor is "further away" so your legs will move through a greater range of movement before your knee comes into contact with the ground. The further the load travels, the greater the amount of work being done and therefore the harder the exercise.
No matter if you raise the lead foot or the trail foot, aim to get your rear knee as close to the floor as possible (it's okay to lightly touch the floor but maybe place a gym mat there to avoid bashing the floor). This extra range of movement will significantly increase the demands on your glutes and the quads as both the lead knee and the hip will be taken into a deeper position that usual and they respond very well to ranges of movement in excess of 90 degrees.
Hope that helps!

I initially thought you meant to do lunges on some sort of decline, perhaps a situp bench which is why I suggested facing up or down. Stupid me.
Your explanation makes perfect sense. Thanks again.
