Good stuff. One of the biggest truths in bodybuilding / strength building, but it still eludes most people.

What about side bends, either with or without weights? Are they really necessary?

I like side bends as an auxiliary exercise (done intermittely during a program), but not always. I wouldn't take them out completely becuase there really isn't much else for the obliques except for rotataional and bridging stuff.
