I don't think I've ever been happy with a heavy bag. The filler always seems to pack down. And I'm upgrading to leather here, because the life of the cheap everlasts has been disappointing.
But while surfing, shopping for another online, I noticed they sell empty bags for much cheaper, and shipping is a fraction of the price. Now, I'm pretty sure these are stuffed with rags and sand normally, but I saw a suggestion of using dried peas. I doubt that would give the weight I want, and I'm thinking if you use a single filler media, packing effects would be lessened. Maybe rice would be ideal? 100 lbs of rice would be about the size of a heavy bag, right? Am I smoking crack? Anybody have experience with this?

Sounds to me like a big mess waiting to happen...

I always went with the water filled heavy bags from Century.
I've have a 80lb for 13yrs its never lost shape. Also I like water filled bags the most because of the give in them. Also a water filled bag is closest to the feel of a human body.

i found a post on everlast's forum (i think). someone suggested empying the bag and getting a carpet tube from a carpet dealer. take the tube, seal one end, put the sandbags in the tube, seal the end, place the tube in the bag and stuff the filling around the tube. probly need to use a stick because i sure did. keeps it uniform and keeps you from busting your hands when the sandbags wander near the outside of the bag. it works pretty good but i would suggest wrapping the tube in a few layers of duck tape. the tube in mine busted after about 3 months. overall it still feels good.

U can either use sand, or odd objects around your house ( low weigh db's, books, old notebooks, siblings..)

The thing that worked best for me is a wrap around that Everlast sells. It goes around most of the heavy-bag (where you punch) and adds added protection to it. That should keep the shape of the bag intact. It has worked well with me. You can find it online at the Everlast website. As for the bag, I would get at least a good imitation leather one. It will last you longer. Let me know if you have a hard time finding that item, I will see if I can get you more information on it.
Here is the item-
