Good read. The weighted Assisted Chins guy absolutely perplexes me.
I’ll toss in an observation for fun:
We’ve got a couple guys that started showing up at the gym recently. Let’s call the Mondays, because that’s the one day out of the week they show up. You may remember the old Looney Tunes cartoons with the big tough, bulldog, and the smaller, yipping, bouncing dog that never shut-up, Spike and Chester. That’s these guys. The bigger guy is quiet, and appears to have decent arms. The smaller guy is the poster child for pencil-necked geeks everywhere, and never shuts his mouth. If you haven’t figured it out already, their workout consists of bench press and curls alone, and somehow they manage to stand in the way of everyone else in the gym while performing these two exercises. Oh well, everyone has their own goals.
Anyway, good one, standAPART.

That was stupid. That guy is a "wanderer" himself. Why does he care what teenangers do or what guys wear. Hes obviously insecure with himself. Standapart you look mighty tuff there big guy with your arms nice and folded.

Gyms are loaded with momos like this. That is the biggest reason I do not go to public gyms anymore. I go to a private MMA gym that I can go to and workout anytime. I love it.

Thanks for the article

He was pretty hard on the "wanderers." I work out at a college rec center, and the facilities are a little sparse when it comes to some things. If a machine that I was going to use has a line, I'll go to a similar backup machine. If I can't find anything that can give me the basic motion that I was going for, I'll start wandering around looking for inspiration, trying to figure out how I can work that muscle group without changing my workout plan too much. Is that such a problem? Am I one of the reasons that you badasses don't like to go to gyms? Lighten up.

Regarding the wandering thing...that's what a lot of guys do when they don't know what to do, but are too proud to ask for help. I do that stuff all the time when I'm at the hardware store trying to get equipped for some project I've never tackled before.
I guess it's my fault for being dumb, but like he said, the staff should actually do their job and help people instead of trying to get laid by being a kick-ass guy that sits at the counter and makes sure everyone swipes their membership card. Most service-industry places you work tell you that, when you see someone wandering around looking lost you're supposed to ask, "can I help you?" but then again I think a lot of people work at gyms because they think it will make them look fit, or they need a job where they can do their college homework at work, or something like that.

Easy on the offensive tone...this article drives home the fact that different thought process need different approaches. That is especially important when you are working out in public places (like a gym) and something I like to write about because I see it on an almost daily basis. No need to get all wired up about it...it is an article, not gospel.

Wanderers fail to plan.
Thats was the take home message is with that observation.
I can care less if someone wanders around the gym looking for their misplaced water bottle, towel, D-handle, or the triceps rope...however most "wanderers" usually pick and choose the next exercise like they are at a salad bar= whatever looks good, isn't being used, and knows what it tastes like.

Triceps rope... yeah, forgot all about that one... jeez...
What can I say? I'm very, very happy that I don't have to train in a public facility anymore.

The only thing I miss about public gym's are the steam baths and the hot honnies wearing insanely well fitted outfits in the aerobic room!LOL I always hated the January crowd that would show up for 3 weeks and cause havock for the regulars. I also hated seeing people in their that where clueless. If you are not willing to read a bunch of books and maybe get some live instruction then do not waste everyones time takeing up space at a gym! Nothing is worse then waiting for a pencil neck to get done doing 50lbs barbell curls int he power rack so you can start your leg workout. Not only is their lack of knoldge in public gyms but serious training is often against the rules so no chains, jumpstretch bands, kettlebells or chalk!

Dude, you're lucky. When I was younger I trained with a bunch of fat dudes, several among them repeated criminal offenders, with an average bench press of 220-250 kilos (and I wasn't even doing time). A hot honey would have made a world of difference.
Then again, the gyms I trained in never had "aerobic rooms". Wasted youth...

Well I was not always fat lol! I am know but it is a repeating them. Get in shape stay their for about year then get fat again etc... I was a national level athlete at one point and time and competed internationaly as well. I just let myself go then got injured then got old!LOL So it is not as easy as it once was due to some limitations due to joint issues from an accident for me to get in great shape. I am doing what I can though and makeing progress!
Oh the YMCA I used to work out was a meat market. 95% of the woman where their to meet men and it did not matter if they where single, married, divorced etc......out of those 95% that where looking a good 70% where off the hook beautiful and 20% where above average and the rest where average or lower. The ones that where looking usualy dressed in the most skimpy tight fitting outfits. In fact the aerobics room should have had the same medical disclaimer that you hear on the Viagra commercials about " seeking medical help if you should have an erection lasting longer then 4 hours!" I hope that is ok to say on this site. I assume if it meets the FCC's rules for decency for radio and tv add's it should be ok for this site.
My best bench in competition was 425 and that was at the age of 19 and drug free. My best ever is 450 and my normal top today is about 405. I do not work out for strength anymore so I do not push my luck. I want to have my shoulder in good shape when I reach 60 years old etc..... So I take it easy. In fact I sometimes go a few months with out bench pressing at all. I do the same thing with my squats and deadlift since I do not compete at all I limit my weight not more then 500lbs. for the most part. I seldom go that heavy prefering to use more reps. I am out for long term health and fitness at this point in my life. I find that useing moderate weight and keeping my reps in the 10 rep range I maintain all the strength I feel I need but do not risk any injury. I use higher rep body weight drills to work on anerobic endurance and such since it is almost impossable to tear a peck or hurt your rotator cuff etc..... with pull-up's, push-up's and body weight squats. Likewise it is almost impossable to hurt yourself doing isometrics squats, deadlift or other exercise's.
I think too many people hurt their progress by being one trick ponies. I prefer to keep my tool box well stocked. The variety alone is a life safer and between weights, body weight exercise and isometrics I can create what ever training effect I want and can also work around injuries. I have always thought it was funny listening to people debate what is better body weight exercise or weight lifting like either one is going to be best for 100% of peoples goals! You might as well have the debate about which is better tool "the hammer" or "the pipe wrench"????????

Opinion: Why do we as a society assume that the stronger or bigger are the most qualified to lead the less inclined? Do bigger, stronger people automatically know more than everyone else in the gym? Is the need to attach ourselves to them, more of a void fulfillment on our part or a satisfactory find in our search for answers?
I've always been a little annoyed by this. I am a small guy. I have been the smallest guy on my rugby team many years, but that doesn't mean I don't know what I'm doing. I have studied the sport more than most of the people I know. I was a just missed the Olympics athlete (Nagano, Alpine skiing - slalom), so I know a thing or two about fitness.
