You take a jump rope , two dumbell handles
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e3/TwoDumbbells.JPG

remove the plates from one side of each DB , then where the plates should be , have the handle of your jump rope tied to that with something elastic that holds it well and do it no both sides , and that's it

that's the DB handle , nothing complicated
it works mainly the shoulders\upper pecs , biceps and forearms on top of what a normal jump rope does.

Now if you want a HEAVY rope , , basically you take about 6 short chains , and stick them around the rope (you should rather buy a ready heavy rope , better)
but stay clear of the middle , where it touches your feet sometimes and the floor ,
this variation works most of your upper body , you can combine them to make a freak badass hardcore rope or smth.

doing dubble swings on a seriously weighted rope (at least 2KG on the handles and 1-2KG on the rope) for more then 20-50 reps takes both strength:speed and endurance.

so would the rope be coming out towards the plates or the other end where the plates were taken off?

Just hold them and go! You probably won't be able to jump rope with much weight at first. So small, 2-5 lb dumbbells. Just be sure the rope comes past the end of the weight so it has room to move. Personally, I've felt most comfortable with 5lbs, but have jumproped holding 10lbs dumbbells. The difference is significant.

but wouldn't the plates get in the way of the rope?
