Would you consider jumping rope as a rival to exercise bikes or jogging? I bought a weighted jump rope today at a garage sale and was wondering if I may be able to replace jogging with it (since winter is creeping up on my back).

Jumping rope is better than all but full race-pace cycling for calories burned per minute, and better tan jogging as well. It ranks up there with running as far as calories burned per unit of time.

Jumping rope is surpirior to running because more muscles are recuited and you go directly up , in terms of calories burned it depends on how you run and jump rope , in the end time in 9\10 cases your heart is the limiting factor anyway , although jumping rope is surpirior , less damage to your knees ( but more damage to your ankles if you do them wrong , although no chance to happen if you have special shoes for this I do them in socks at home and never had problems)

you can also hook Small dumbells to the handles or bands on your back , or do dubble \ tripple \ heavy rope unders to gain mad upper body strength , laso it's cheap and portable you can do it anywhere...

I like do alternate jumping rope with heavy DB handle and rowing , very good you get a big pump from this and yet manage to do a workout that is considered " cardio "

I'm currently lovin it. Easier than running but at the same time harder. It's takin a while for me to learn (I keep trippin up the rope) but I keep at it. Great stuff.

I have a rope that I am going to be using as often as possible. The reasons I will jump rope are to improve these attributes:

Agility
Quickness
Coordination
Endurance
Mental Focus

Eventually I will work up to 10 minutes straight every other day, with double unders and crossovers in there for good measure. Maybe side to side jumping and other more advanced stuff can be added in, but I am just learning for now.

I want to learn tripple unders before I get old... I need to tiehr break my weighted rope or buy a new one though =\

also dubble unders with the 4kg handles would be nice , I can only do a few and keep getting stuck...
moving iron with that kind of speed is much harder then just moving your arms

p.s > new fancy rank for me for spamming the forum
