Ive just started doing burpees. I really get a lot out of them. Would anyone out there have a suggestion of a routine that would really kick my blank? Burpees have a remarkable effect on your athletic ability. I already notice a difference in running.

tabata really is the first thing to try with burpees though

How do you mix tabatas with burpees?

For a tabata workout, using standard burpees, you would follow the following 4 minute routine:

(Complete the circuit 8 times)

20 Seconds Burpees
10 Seconds Rest

When you come to do burpees, you should aim to do as many as possible within the time frame. Do not pace yourself, just attack and perform at maximum output.

If you wanted variety, you could perform alternating styles of burpees (every second circuit = a variation burpee), or even a different burpee variation every circuit. Look on this forum for articles / videos of the different burpees you could perform.

I've been doing burpees since August 2007 (3-4 times a week, 1 week break every 2 months). I started with 10 descending sets (1-2 minute rests). After 2-3 months, I was up to 20 descending sets (1-2 minute rests).

Every time I did my 20 sets it was painful and grueling, but I stuck with it for about a month until I realized I should rewind and start over at 10 and patiently add a set each month. My body was not ready for it. I would rather be set back a bit than just quit all together.

10 descending sets was a little too easy for me so I added an extra pushup (2 pushup burpees without the jump, 30 second rests in between sets). 9 months later and I'm still doing them...now 4-5 times a week. I'm only at 13 descending sets, but why rush. I'll be at 30 in no time.

Only advice I can give is that you have to be motivated and disciplined to do them. Many times I've come close to giving up because it does get boring and repetitive. I've packed on alot of muscle and lost about 10-15 pounds of body fat within these 9 months. There's no easy way around them. You just have to get up and do them.

Check out the prisoner burpee challenge...do 20/19/18/17/16/15/14/13/12/11/10/9/8/7/6/5/4/3/2/1 burpees with minimal rest between sets against the clock. Did it last week - it kicks ass!

30 minutes is good
25 minutes is excellent
20 minutes or less is god-like

Also you could try doing a similar thing, like this 10/9/8/7/6/5/4/3/2/1/1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8/9/10, whatever suites you, or even try starting with more or less reps and keeping the same concept. I love these burn-out type things. There hardcore. Note, doing this with ANYTHING, not just burpees, is insanely hardcore. Also note that what I mentioned can be done with a higher intensity exercise but starting from 5 or somthing... Heaps of things you can do with it.

You've already done the hard part and started DOING burpees! Good for you, they suck and they're hard to make yourself do.

Read around on the site, there's a lot of burpee ideas to be found. Other than that, just use your creativity. I make up something different to do all the time cuz I get bored, and it's never hard to come up with something new to throw into it to make it suck even more.
