I saw this mentioned a lot in here as a good excersise.

I tried it today and it's really fun!

I'm doing it with a long towel so I can make long motions up and down...but when I'm up I put my head up past the bar alternating left and right. Is this the right way or should I not even pass the bar's level?

Thats ok. Alternately you can use a longer towel and start from akneeling position or what ever for you to get a full moevement range.

It's simple and a great excersise!:

You have a pullup bar, or an horizontal beam or bar of some sort.

You grab a towel (or a rope if you prefer) and throw it over the horizontal support so you have two "row handles" one on each side.

This way you grab each side of the towel or rope and pull yourself up. The longer the towel the longer the motion from bottom to top will be :)

Hope it's clear, eldus

So this is not something that you can do without a bar? I would like to know if you have any suggestions of a way to do pullups or chin ups without a bar (and without a door, as I have tried to but I fear it will rip my door off the hinge), or at least get the same benefit for my upper back. Any ideas?

I wrote it in a diff post , anyway I think you can construct rings and hang them somewhere in your apartmant , I'm sure you will find somewhere in your apartmant or at least in a nearby park so you can take them there

If you're already doing towel pullups you may as well take advantage and start working offsets towards a 1 arm. Just grab the towels at different levels and concentrate on using the arm with a higher hand hold as you pull. from there you can do a few flag variations that help a lot for combining pulling strength with active core movement. might be a little sport specific for your interests but it works for me.
