I've been doing body wieght exercises for some months and I love it but I still have so much to learn...I managed to find a routine that covers the whole body but it's getting very time consuming because my reps are increasing and each exercise has 3 sets....this is the only routine I know so I'm looking to learn ways to cut down on the sets but at the same time raise the tempo...

Here's an example of what I've been doing

Push ups, 137-100-100 reps
Chin-ups, 28-20-20 reps
Bench Dips, 60-50-50 reps
Upside-down Shoulder Press, 17-14-12 reps
crunches, 139-100-100 reps
Squats, 3 sets, 30-30-30 reps
Calf Raises, 574-500-612 reps

Here's my progress so far:

Fruitarian I hope the mods don't think I am advertising.
You work out is great, but like you said the reps are getting high.

If you want less reps with bodyweight, see if you can look up GravityadvantageMax book, from Elasticsteel web page.

I order mine yesterday and anxiously waiting for it. Will post what I think of it.

Hi officer....I love the high reps....it's the only time I've gotten the results I want  low reps don't do a thing for me....and I got past the time thing by supersetting the routine...OH WHAT A KILLER!!!!....let us know how the book went!

Solid workout tonight....I pushed myself past my limits a lot of the time....I switched back to regular push ups because the clap press up weren't hitting my chest.

push ups, 121-100-100, max reps
Chin-ups, 24-20-20, max reps

SUPERSET

Squats, 60-50-50, max reps
Dips, 40-40-40, max reps

SUPERSET

Calf Raises, 1100-1100-1300, max reps
Handstand Push Ups, 17-15-17, max reps

SUPERSET

Crunches, 143-106-100, max reps
Pull-ups, 20-18-12, max reps

Jul 11, 2006, 11:16 PM
F1,
you do 121 push ups and 20 pull ups?
Wholly, no wonder you are in shape.

Do you eat grains, beans, nuts? or just fruits?

Jul 11, 2006, 11:21 PM
You got into that shape with high reps?

The Fruitarian One
Jul 12, 2006, 12:45 AM
Thanks guys...yep ....I just eat fruits......

Like I say High reps have really got me the results I want....I guess high reps works for me!...so I ain't gonna mess with it..

I'm not that happy with my chins...I wanna get them in the mid 20's each set at least....

Jul 12, 2006, 07:52 AM
F1,
it is very possible that your muscle fibers go well with strength endurance, which is high reps. I am the same way. Pure strength get's me think, and endurance doesn't work for me.
But high reps body weight is my specialty.

P.S. Do you concider nuts fruits?
I am a vegan, but I eat grains, seeds, and sometimes beans.
Also I value high alkaline diet.

The Fruitarian One
Jul 12, 2006, 09:18 AM
I think your right there Green.....I strongly believe that everyone should find what works for them ....even if it goes against the grain...

Yeah ....nuts are concidered fruits....infact fruits pretty much cover all rawfood....but not a lot of people know that....most nuts are heat treated/cooked and you gotta try to find raw nuts, I'm not into nuts at all though....

Here is tip that a lot of people won't admit, or whatever. You really do not need to go past 30 reps at a time on exercises. On pullups you can go as low as 5 and high as 10 and still get the same if not better results; for pushups don't go past 30. How and why? Simple, increase the difficulty, and keep the reps low. How? For starters, on pullups it is all about increasing the difficulty on leverage; you can read more detail on this in threads on my forum www.bodyweighttrainin.org as well as the articles on Dragon Doors website. With pushups there are so many variations that you can do: HSPU, incline, one arm, and so on. When you think or feel that you done every leverage you can or want to do, add weights: ankle or/and weightbelt.

I don't think F 1 uses weights. It's cool since it's working for him.

I may sound weird F 1, but how do you get protein.

Do you eat sprouted stuff, like grains and seeds (radish, onion, buckwheat sprouts) ?

The Fruitarian One
Jul 12, 2006, 12:37 PM
I do it this way because it makes me happy and to me that's the most important thing and it's also working for me.....

Speedy...your probably right in every way....but right now I'm very happy doing what I'm doing...and thanks for your input.

yes all sets are to near failure.

Who really knows how we get our protien?

Jul 12, 2006, 12:40 PM
Well, many people don't feel like they are getting protein, unless it's a big slice of stake. (I don't want to critisize anyone) For me personally I need grains with most meals. Again we are all different. I was also told that grains is bird food and people should not eat it.

*Who really knows what is the best food for us?* That's my question.
If I knew the answer, I would have been owning Bill Gates. lol

That is fantastic I am going to do the same excersises as yourself. I don't mean to copy but i would like to give it a go.

It looks like it would be a three times a week workout because of the amount that is done right?

The before and after are incredible.

How long have you been working at it? Also how many calories do you take in a day or do you not count.

Baofuhaibo
Jul 12, 2006, 03:12 PM
Not sure about vegans, but is whey against your nature(it's just whey!)? Because remember that every pound of muscle burns 50 extra calories a day while you just sit around being you, and your body needs protein while you work out. How long do you work out? If it's over an hour total, then I'd drink pure Gatorade for endurance. If not, pure protein shake(alternating with water depending on the taste).

Try a mixture. There's a product called Accelerade that has a protein-carb ratio which is very efficient for working out. Remember this: Pure sports drinks block fat receptors, putting your body into flight mode, storing fat for long term use. It's actually their purpose. Increase endurance. Try it out if it's not against your eating thing.

I don't bother about nutrition at all...I just eat what fruits I need when I'm hungry and go about my way...

Yeah...I just get out there 4 times a week with the sole purpose of pushing myself past my limits and having fun doing it....I go hiking 1-2 a week also but I think I'll cut that down to 1....I've been doing body wieght now for several months....and I love it ...nothing else has given me the results that I get with bodywieght....

I like to keep it as simple and as natural as I can....

The high reps gives me the best of both worlds I think because it's easy at the start but after a while I feel like a ton a bricks....

Hey Splice I don't care if you do it too...it's all about the sharing buddy...maybe you can post your numbers too....keep me on my toes!!!

I think i missed something about your nutrition. Your not saying you only eat fruit right?

Nah i am probably weak as hell doing bodyweight stuff, i will be surprised. But i will start tommorow morning because i sometimes dread working out when i get home from work.

So my workouts will have to be 30 minutes or less to get my stuff together and get out the door.

We will see how it goes.

Yeah...I just eat Fruits.....right now I'm on watermelon and I usually stay on it for the rest of the season....coz it's getting so hot down here in Tx and it's what my body needs so I have....on top of that it tastes so good!

A lot of people wanna get into arguements and debates with me about it but it's what I thrive on and really isn't a subject that up for dedate for me...I don't push it down peoples throats and if people are sincerely interested then I have no problems sharing.....

Let me know how you do anyway Splice!!!!

Appleman,
I am not saying use weights as in weight training, I am saying use weights to "increase" the difficulty of the exercise.

A set is a number of reps: sets do not mean to failure.

Hey F 1,

I am thinking may be you can make the calve raises harder by placing something under the ball of your feet. (2nd challange)

Also may be you can do other obdominal exercises instead of crunches.
LIke reverse crunches let's say.

Just a thought.

Yeah I actually wanna string together another full body routine that I can switch to every other month...got any ideas or can you point me to a place where I can pick out various body weight exercises that I like?

I wanna keep it real basic and simple and I got to be able to do it at home with no equipment what so ever.

Any help would be much appreciated.....

My knowledge of bodyweight exercises is pretty limited so I hope I can learn a lot from here!!!!

F 1,
What I'll do is take your routine and try to make it more challanging different, but using similar exercises and break up.

Push ups- you can try - elevated feet push ups, feet on wall push ups, fist pushups, close grip push ups

Chin ups- you can try - hand on wrist chin ups, L-chin ups, tuck chin ups, side to side chin ups

Squats- you can try lunges, dead lifts, chair step ups, jump squats
Dips- you can try - incline dips, side to side dips, right angle side to side dips

Calve raises- you can try- one leg calve raises, toes out calve raiser, toes in calve raisers, toes on object calve raisers (this one will give you more range of motion)

Hand stand push ups - you can try- grip variations, side to side movement

crunches- you can try- reverse crunches, leg lifts, V-ups (level 18)

PUll ups- same variations as chin ups

Hope this helps, I have been working out mostly body weight, so I know a few tricks. :-D

Push Ups: One arm pushups to full body plyo push ups, then push ups till knees.

Chin ups: Try the "running man" and side to side chinups from the Thug Workout series on www.youtube.com, or even muscle ups on pullup bars. Try going to the waist if that's too hard. Chinup until your doing them assited, and beyond.

Squats: Hindu Squats, Jumping Squats, One Legged Jumping Squats, whatever tires you out real quick. Then go back double leg for burnout.

Dips: Side to side and explosive dips(same as plyo pushups), go until bench dips.

Calf Raises: One leg calf raises with toes on object, explosive(if you can produce the force needed), then explosive calf raises. Only bend your knees slightly, then straighten them fast and jump using only your calves.

Hand Stand Push Ups: Try explosive and bend arms slightly and try one handed negatives. Do on boxes to increase range of motion. Have a partner hold onto your ankles and help you handstand-climb stairs.

Crunches: Hang upside down and do twisting crunches to either side, hold something(a cement block, anything moderately heavy held in two hands) to increase difficulty, then drop it to burnout. Also, make sure your lower back isn't weak and start trying twisting hyperextensions. hold whatever you held for the situps to make them harder. Most playgroun equipment has monkey bars that can accomidate you, and you won't be there long with these exercises.

Pull Ups: same variations as before, plus try an over-under grip for the chinups and you won't even have to do two seperate. Just do four sets instead and switch grip each set.

That's how you do it. I'm a personal trainer. Ask me anything.

Hey Baofuhaibo.....don't say that because I will be picking your brains..

Thanks so much...

You guys have given me plenty to chew on....

I think with that and Applemans contribution I can put a couple of decent varied routines together...

I particularly like the hanging crunches...

I want to ask what your opinion is on one arm/one leg stuff

alot of people say they are just for show ......do they have any merit?

I can do 20 one arm push ups...each arm and I got up to 8 reps with my hand on my bicep for the one armed chins....

One arm one leg stuff for the show-
I don't know about that. It's nice to show off something only few people can do.
At the same time the strength always doubles when you do one side. Sometimes the strength even more than doubles due to stability factor.

I personally see nothing wrong with one limb exercises. In the matter of fact I prefer them.

Level 7 or 11 has one arm horizontal rows. These are the bomb.

Man those supersets have made it an EXETREMELY TOUGH week....and I'm gonna have to rest well and also make sure I don't overtrain...so I may take an extra day off now that I'm supersetting which is basically why it's been a tough week.

I'm currently traing 4 days in a row but I'm gonna look into training every other day or 3 days instead.....I gotta make sure I get my rest or it's all a waste of time.

Exercises using a single limb, as in one legged squats and one armed pushups, do several things.

First of all, it fools the body into not shutting down when too many are performed, as it doesn't use both matching appendages to move large amounts of "load". This explains why in isolation machine exercises like leg curls and extensions, you can use over half the weight for the same number of reps that you normally do double limbed.

Second, usually a balance component is introduced, working stabilizing muscles to produce strength, in sometimes a greater range of motion than normally. This challenges physiological parameters in the proprioceptive plane(the system that causes muscle to fire in order to keep balance, and muscles to fire more quickly to prevent injury), and usually much more muscles are used in single limb exercises.

Thirdly, this style of exercise better prepares you for everyday survival tasks as you will often have to use single limbs from awkward positions to accomplish a means to an end.

They are also great to keep reps low, as they are usually extremely hard. Use them first, then burnout with both limbs. I use BW to burnout a lot. Breaking a beer keg over your face is for show, single limb exercises are hardcore.

I'd probably alternate between limbs to burn out I think it's better when symetry comes to mind

question for you fruitarian. I see on another site you say "No problem....a Fruitarian is someone that eats fruits, veggies and nuts/seeds, etc. ". So you don't eat meat at all. Or you basically go along the lines of if it didnt come from mother earth you don't eat it?

I think a frutarian and Vegan are confused here. I may be wrong.

Hi guys!!!!!!!

Splice...it's all about labels my friend....I'm a Fruitarian....I personaly choose to only eat fruits....because that's what I thrive on....but a Fruitarian diet consists of UNCOOKED...Fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds....

It's all about listening to your own bodies needs....another term that is used is RAW VEGAN...Fruitarianism is the step up from Raw Veganism because it's more cleansing....

Check out this site for more info.... http://www.fruitarian.com

Hope that helped Slice...

Thanks buddy!

Ok....

Here's some photo updates...the photo's don't show it but my shape has changed a bit...I'm much thicker in the torso (lower back and abs) and my arms are slightly thicker....I'm actually more functional looking.

I credit this to my new full body routine....the old one was too focused on the upper body. Also since getting rid of push ups and doing more dips my strength has increased to the point where my handstand push ups have gone through the roof!!!!

Apart from that as you can see there's not much difference from the last ones....but thats where the victory is because I've actually got myself back in shape and now I'm looking to surpass the old pics!
