I don't know about the pull ups, but behind the head lat pull downs are bad for the shoulder. I would say that behind the head pull ups is not an ideal way to do pull ups.
How many people do you pull behind your head? The real use of the exericse is pulling to the chest.

There is an article on dragondoor about pullups in general, and the person thinks that behind the neck are completely useless: I agree.

Stick with normal pullups and just adjust your leverage or/and add weights to make it harder. For additional shoulder strength do handstand pushups (HSPU)

If you want to pull straight down and don't injure your head, just use the rings and keep your body straight vertical.

Bar behind head pull ups are supposedly good for all muscles in the back as well as arms

It always hurts my shoulders. May be it's just my lack of flexibility in the shoulders.

It puts the rotator cuff in a bad position that;s why it kills shoulders

True, I don't think our shoulders are designed for that stuff.

I have read somewhere that, for some people the body geometry doesnt allow them to perform these. In other words the body cannot be in the "up" position of the pullup. The bone structure doesnt allow you to have the full motion.

I don't remmember the last time you pulled someone behind you in combat. Usually pull people toward you from, let's say when you headbutt someone. So why would you train that movement even if you could?

Behind the neck pullups is a great excersize imho. You cant cheat and swing yourself up, and you have to keep your elbows out for a perfect adduction. A great alternative for regular pullups imho.

I know a guy who has been doing them for years and he is ok.
He is probably the exception, rather than the rule.

Unless your into Olympic Lifting I doubt you have can do it safely. Take a look at these:

If you don't possess that kind of joint flexibility then you shouldn't be doing anything behind the neck. And I doubt many know how to acquire that flexibility (I bieng one of them). If you know, please share :).

I can't say whether they are good or bad.....but I've done many of them without any problem.
If you feel pain or have shoulder problems, then it is better to listen to your body and not do them.
Common sense is the bottom line....if it hurts, don't do it.

Even if you don't feel the pain in them don't do it. They are pointless and the risk is to great. There is no advantage to behind the neck other then boosting one's ego.

they are easier then normal pullups some say actully
anyawy no point in it you can isolate the latsimus dorsi from the back by doing wide grip pullups on the bottom half only anyway

BEHIND THE head pull ups are fine, in fact encouraged!!! Shoulder pain is usually a result of tight internal rotators due to too pushing strength , this helps stretch them and also strengthen the rear delt and lats and back in a good posture position
