View Full Version : Human Jumping abuilities and limits.
How high can a human jump?
Those Chinese movies show people jump on 10 feet balconies.
Jumping on and off trees.
Is that skill?
Is that myth?
Is that internal training?
I read a kung fu book once.
They said that if you keep jumping on and off objects making them higher and higher with time and at the same time keep adding weight to yourself you can jump very high once you take off the stuff and get a running start.
They claim that after two years most people were able to jump over their own height.
I would guess it is somehow possible, but tenth floor high jump.
That I have doubts about.

There are things that people can do that are amazing, however, not everyone can do it all. All I can say, is stop reading those magazines, and stop believing those movies. Truth be told, Michael Jordan is enough example to what a person can do from a jumping point of view.

Jordan was light (in terms of weight) and tall.
But there was a 5'7 basketball player who jumped very high.

Ok,
point taken.
Look at his leg muscles.

Actually Olympic lifters have some of the highest verts! each one on average has around a 40" vertical from the clean and jerks and snatches!

the average NBA players vertical is about 28"........

I guess - such a massive explosive compound movemnet, shifting a great deal more then just their bodyweight.

cleans are a similar explosive movement to jumping.

That 5'7" basketball player who could dunk was Spud Webb and he even won the slam dunk contest once. He could dunk by the time he was just 5 feet tall and the ring is at 10 feet , so isn't that amazing ????

hmm , NBA players legs are fucking long = low leverage = high speed and room for mass ===== if they would train thier vert more the nets could be place like 50% higher and basketball would look unreal

the highest recorded dunk was on I believe 12 feet high! that would be sick if the rims were like 11'! see how many people can dunk now

Many wushu practitioners can jump inhumanly high. This was the best picture I could find but I saw an exhibition in Lansing a while back and I can safely say that these men could honestly jump over a school bus easily...http://mudoima.blogs.com/photos/mudo_classes/pbkick1.jpg
Karate's got it's share of jumpers too 8)

spud webb (the basketballer pictured earlier) had a 53" / 132cms vert which is probably about right as he's 170 odd cms, a ring is 305cms and his head his backboard ht which is about 285cms

off by ten" 43"
he's 5'6''. to hit his head on the rim he would need a 54" vert. not even close to that.....

As for vertical jump limits, go to youtube and search for the streetballer "Air Up There". He's doing 720 dunks and also a 360 between the legs and he's 6'2". I think he has hops like few other. Just check the vids.
Can't find him.
Will keep looking.
Thanks.

yea, i'm doing half squats and the clean n jerk plus air alert to increase my jump... i guess there are two things... the hamstring glutes quad for the initial jump and the calves for the spring
Maybe there's a proper technique to jumping... those parkour guys should know

I think a vertical of 50+ is possible. I saw a video of a guy highjumping a world record of 8'. Not sure if this is still the world record, but damn 8 feet! I highjumped in high school and some guys i knew could do 360 dunks yet couldnt clear a height of 5'-10" regularly.

Look at this guys legs, I bet if you work those muscles similar to the shaolin monks you could do that too. My chinese teacher came from China and as a boy thats what he wanted to do, cause who really wouldnt, but he read so many books and stuff on that. He said they jump so high by putting on these leg (like 50 lbs) and chest (like 100 lbs) weights, and just sit there and jump in place untill they cant get off the ground. Im definately gonna try that but I bet even a midget could dunk after that training.

Ok I have to say I think you need to stop watching kungfu movies as your source of worldly knoldge especialy as it relates to human performance issues!!!LOL
I have been able to dunk since 6th grade and since I started exerciseing with weights in 2nd grade I have always found verticle jumping to be easy. Anyone can improve their verticle and about the best I think anyone that is dedicated to their training should ever set up as a goal is about 50 inch verticle. Now I am not saying anyone can achieve this only that it is achieveable for most if they train hard and smart. In addition to decent genetics hard heavy lifting combined with speed work is almost like a recipe for good verticle.
Deadlift
Deep Squats
Power Clean's
Stiff legged Deadlift
Calf raise's seated and standing
one leged hyper extensions with medicine ball
one leged squats
ballistic squats
sprints
isometrics
and last but not least plyometrics
You should focus the heavy compound movements in the 5 rep range. You want to maintain high tension in your body at all times.I would not do more then 5 sets of 5 reps three times a week. I would work a weight until I could do 8 reps with it then add more weight to get down to barely in the 3-5 rep range again and work up again. Plyometrics should not be done more then three times a week and not more then 3 sets of 10 reps. Any skill based training needs to be done before resitance training since fatigue will add bad programing into the skill sets you are practiceing. You intensity should be high and you should stop while you are still fresh exhaustion does nothing for you unless you are working on endurance which is counter productive with explosiness. Rotate your exercise's so that each week you hit them all at least once and keep the core full of compound movments and ballistics.
I did high jump, tripple jump and 100 meter sprints in school as well as football and wrestleing. I was varsity all 4 years. I used weights and other exercise systems to make up for lack of natural genetics. Everyone thought I was a natural but nothing could have been farther from the truth. I am not a verticle guru coach but have helped a lot of amature athletes over the years drasticly improve their verticle and 40 yard sprints for combines.
I have never put a routine together for someone over the internet so I am a little bit hesistant to do so. usualy I watch someone for a few weeks working out before I offer to help them with their goal. So try to put a routine together if you need some help I will happily give you the nudge in the right direction!
