View Full Version : Plyometric boxes.
My gym has a stack of them. The shortest one is like 6 inches and the tallest is like 2.5-3 feet.
Basically people jump on and off them. Most people are goofing around. I did see a few that do some fun stuff.
Any thoughts on them?
They are good of you play sports which need those jumping movements.
Otherwise I don't see a point.

True. They are best for the "Jumpers" I did see a video on their use.
Many pro athletes use them. Basketball, foot ball, etc. So depends on how you use them, most athletes can benefit from them.
It doesn't have to be boxes. Benches in the park are fine too.
Plyometrics creates explosive contraction, etc power.
Power is work over time, The less time the more power.
Plyometric is muscle contraction that happens fast.
Somehow most people confuse plyometrics with only leg exercises.
Intense has a point though. Why do that if you don't need to. But... They are fun once in a while if you like recreation and are looking for new way to work out. I suppose this forum is about that.
It's cool to do this stuff for fun. So are monkey bars.
It's just that a runner for example will not benefit from the monkey bars.
An arm wrestler will not benefit from plyometric boxes.
Fun is fun, can't take away from that.

I dont know about them being for fun, definitely for plyometrics....they are great for powerful legs
Thanks guys for your replies.
I did some research on plyometrics. For about two months now I been working my legs strictly through plyometrics just to see how it goes.
My legs are more defined, more muscular. I definitely see how it would improve the athletic performance or military performance.
I am sure everyone knows that a jump squat is more powerful than regular squat. If you practice plyometric lung, than your regular lung becomes a piece of cake too.
P.S. Soon I am looking to train my upper body plyometrically too.

You sir, are wrong. The legs are the largest muscles in your body. In a Swedish study, men who focussed on lower body in their workouts gained more upper body strength then men who focussed on upper body strength. Working them releases more human growth hormone than other muscles, because they are large and absolutely essential in the body's eyes. The back and biceps are essential to a runner's form, as the swinging of the arms isn't just for show, it actually helps the legs syncronize with the upper body to get your whole body moving. The whole body is important in every activity, unless you enter a preacher curl competition, and even then, it still helps if you train legs, for the reasons stated above.

Well, you can't argue that athletes that need huge upper bodys with little legs not to keep them down shouldn't work legs much
...you might be getting bigger all over but without proportion
and yes that study is true , that's why also so many kids who want a six pack think they are hard to get because they never work anything but abs and blaim everyone that works out his body and abs indirectly for freak genetics or steroids
