View Full Version : Calves.
What is the best way to get strong and well-develop calves?
Bodyweight only.
One leg high jump. No kidding.
Front kick against the large pads.
When ever I do those I always feel it in the calves. Just warm up your legs before you do it.

Thanks,
it does help. Let's see if my calves change.

Hill sprints, hiking, cycling, soccer, calf raises, ballet dancing.
:P There are many ways to work the calves, I find the best ways are by doing activities which require you to use them a lot. You'll get the muscle just as a by product.

I have two suggestions which both are very effective.
Calf raises. Stand on a set of steps with your heels hanging off the edge, and do raises.
Squats but stand on the balls of your feet the entire time.

The squats on the ball of the feet sound dangerously close to Furey stuff. lol
The first one, with heels hanging of is the bomb. That's level three right?

Their exercise level programs I don't agree with. So I couldn't answer that. As far as Furey goes, I started my bodyweight training decision with his book, but did not get this exercise from him. This one was a suggestion that he proved results that somebody that used to be a bodybuilder and compete. It was scary seeing the dude in a Speedo, but his physique was very impressive. Then I later learned that someone I know that clearly does not workout does this very exercise (don't know why since it's the only thing he does, but whatever) and he had some serious muscular calves going on. Now if he just did that with the rest of his body, his girl would definitely show some appreciation for that.

Why are you so curious? Hmmm.....fag...J/K
It was the dude that used to bodybuild. He was showing me pictures of him competing. I respect the dedication to the sport.
Yep, I would not want to see a dude in Speedos either.
That reminds me, got to call off that trip to the beach lol

Yes jump rope usually takes full advantage of the calves.
You don't use much quads on those small jumps.
Plenty of calve development there.
Jump rope or run on the balls of your feet.
Even walk on the balls of your feet. Or even on toes. :-D

Being that jump rope is an impact exercise, adding the balls of the feet sounds really painful in the beginning.
Is there any other way to jump rope?

Okay, again I was not clear. What I was thinking was focusing that you are only on the balls of your feet. But if you analyze oneself or observe others you might notice that they land on the balls but quickly roll to using the complete amount of the bottom of the foot.

Just do it in shoes on soem sort of shock absorvant surface , Blasts your calves even better but harder to jump
That's very true actually.
If you do jump rope on softer, shock observant surface you calves get tired much faster.
I checked out F1's work out. He does insane numbers of calf raises. Who can count all those reps? Not me, I'd go nuts from boredom. If you skip rope for 10-20 minutes, you'll probably hit the same number of reps or exceed it.
Is there impact in skipping rope? Sure, but I don't think it's as damaging as running on pavement heel to toe. Running on the balls of your feet and jumping rope uses the natural shock absorbancy of the calves, achilles tendon, arch, and quads. Obviously you want to wear proper shoes and jump on a resilient surface. Why tempt fate?

I jump with socks on the floor :S for like nearly a year
I messed my ankle twice but never anything else
Explosive movement like jumping always hit the muscles harder than simply going up on toes. Plus the higher you aim to jump the more muscles will work. But if you jump on and off stuff like the bench, somehow quads feel it more than calves.

I just know I used to run on a treadmill and since then my knee problem started acting up. Well I quit any impact exercise and for the most part my knee problem has remained dormant. So I sold it for a stationary bike and haven't had the problem since. So this is why I believe in cases like mine impact exercises are a bad thing: this does not hold true for all. Then in those cases stuff like calf-raises while watching TV, or just walking around the house on the balls of your feet are a good suplement. Besides, if you push yourself on a bike hard enough (non-imact exercise) your calfs will develop. Notice how the serious bike riders are the ones with the upside down heart on their calf's?

You know it's also possible to hold Dumbells or something heavy for more resistance..

A common source of knee pain and injury related to running is running style. Running shoe design contributes and perpetuates to incorrect biomechanics by encouraging people to land on their heels and roll forward and over-stride. The human body did not evolve to land heel first as it transmits the shocks directly up the leg and into the knee. Instead, people should shorten their stride, land on the balls of their feet, and let the natural springyness of the arch, achilles tendon, calves, etc. soak up the shock and propel the body forward.
