Hi there,
Anyone dips here?
In HS I used to love dipping. Everytime I would dip, my chest and tri's would blow up. Later on family life did not give me much chance to work out, except for some occasional push ups.
I wan to get back to dipping, but every time I do it my elbows hurt.
Did anyone experience this?
Anyone able to get around that?

Did you injure your elbow at some point?
Do you have arthritis?
Did you gain allot of weight?

I just want to help. Please don't take offence.

Appleman,
thanks for your reply.
No offence is taken.

I did gain a little weight. Not much.
No arthritis, I don't think.
Also I don't think I injured my elbows.

Some people tell me to keep at dipping and I will get past pain.
I don't want to do that, cause pain can be an indication of potential injury.

Here is a thought Getix,

may be you are doing it wrong.
Also may be your triceps got weakened. After all when you do dips, your whole weight is on the elbows.

Just wondering how many push ups can you do?

Try to keep your hands wide. This will take the pressure of the elbows.

Like Tran said elbows wide will help.

Try to get them narrower and narrower as you get stronger.

Try to move your elbows around.
See if there is a position with minimal pain.

Sometimes it's a forarm weakness.
I heard of people feeling pain in the elbow which is coming from the forarm.
Try to make your forarm stronger.
May be that will help.

Here are some ideas.

Warm up your elbows and your wrist by moving them around.

Take fish oil, that lubricates the joints and keep the inflammation down.

Do only on rep or as many as you can before the pain is felt.

At first do the dips only 2-3 times a week.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys,
at this point I am working myself into it little by little.
Trying to decide if I should stop at at pain or work through it.
If the pain will come later on every day and allow me to do more reps I will stop at a pain. Otherwise I'll see.
Thanks.

I know people who swear by squats as a way to treat bad knee joints.
Your case is slightly different, you don't seem to want to treat elbow pain. YOu want to learn how to do dips with out pain.
I am going to go out on the limb and suggest partial movement.
Don't go all the way down. Go only a little down. If there is no pain do that for a while. Than go down a little lower and practice like that for a while. See how far you can get down that way.

I have been practicing and avoiding pain. Usually many sets with few reps.
This is working. I did 15 today and no pain.
Knock on wood.

Overtraining?

Pain comes from the rear of the elbow i.e. on the triceps insertion?

Triceps tendonitus?

Thanks for reply.

Overtraining, not sure.

More likely chronic injuries, may be even nutrient dificiency.

Hi Guys,

I had a question about severe pain in my collar bone area like there is a ton of stress on this area when I do dips.

I notice when I lean forward to work the chest it hurts more...and when I do straight up and down it hurts way less..the least amount of pain is when I do partial reps a third of the way and remain up and down.
straight.

I just started doing dips so any help would be great cause this exercise I would like to continue doing since it is great and I get an awesome pump from the movement.
