Hey,

My name is Matthew. I'm 16, weigh 160lbs, 6'1"

I have been reading articles from BWC for quite some time. I figured it was time to take part in it.

When I was about 12 years old I had an injury to my knees. For one reason or another I wasn't healed of this injury until January '08. Once my doctor said I was okay, I was off. After four years of a sedentary life I got 'physical.'

I started taking classes at a local gymnastics school and someday hope to compete.

My biggest goals right now are to do a straddle press to handstand and a full planche push-up.

welcome to bwc matthew!

good luck with your gymnastics goals. you are quite tall so the moves will be harder for you but not impossible. have patience and they will come.

you probably have a decent coach to teach you these skills but here is a few articles for you to read.
press handstands: http://www.drillsandskills.com/article/16
planche and front lever(you have probably seen this): http://gymnasticbodies.com/articles1.html

Thanks cathal. I have seen both of those links before. I've been using a lot of techniques that they suggest. It's not nearly as easy as I first thought when I began.

My planche is coming along though. I held a tuck planche for almost ten seconds recently. Not too impressive but, i'm working on it.

This weekend I plan on recording some of my training on camera. Maybe you could give me some tips. =]

Once again, thanks.

The majority of training hold(i.e. planches, handstands, what have you) is to keep doing them. Do them during commercials while watching TV, compete with friends, pick a time and try to meet it. It's a lot like training for jump roping. You just have keep at and get discouraged. I'm sure you'll do fine, keep at it.

I don't get discouraged easily. If I did I wouldn't be in gymnastics. My parents are dead set against it.

Thanks though. My tuck planche is getting better.

Why is that Matthew? Seems a shame...

Not entirely sure. It's really upsetting.

Competing in gymnastics has been my dream for many years.

I was actually just asked by the Gymnastics coach at an out of town gym to be on his team. Really exciting.

I would be going to the first team practice tomorrow but, I have a problem with my left heel. I have been having a procedure done on it every other week for a month or two. Hopefully it will be better soon. But, I just got back from the foot doctor and will be unable to walk well tomorrow. =O

I threw together a video of me on my new pull-up bar =D just a bit ago before the pain set it.

Might go check it out, i'm editing right now.

Thanks for the concern Dave.cyco

Hi Matthew.

That's a real shame that your parents aren't encouraging you. At 16, you could be doing a lot worse things so don't be put off.

I see from your youtube page that you also do a bit of drumming. Two good interests in my opinion, exercise and music.

Keep up the good work and good luck with the feet.

Hey, thanks for the encouragement.

I do play drums. Currently for my church band, but just curious, how did you know that I play drums? I don't think it says so on my youtube channel.

That's great man!
Also, good luck with your gymnastics-you must be very motivated to start at 16! And as everyone else said, work hard and the moves will come.

That's weird how your parents could be against gymnastics...but then again my parents are against my fitness work too :(
