Well here I go I've finally plucked up courage to post!

I am 44 years of age and 5 feet 11 inches tall and unfortunately for me 15 stones exactly (95 kilos) with body fat of around 25%. (I have a photo on the fridge door of me now for motivation...it works sadly and is available for comedy viewing by request only )

In days gone by I played football (soccer) and basketball. The latter being at quite a high level for here in the UK. I last did these two sports properly about ten years ago.

I have been a member of so many gyms since then that I have lost count and have read that many magazines on routines etc that I am bored.

Having just returned from a holiday of two weeks I am now the biggest I have ever been but I am determined to get fit and lose the weight. The only exercise I get is playing golf 3 times a week, and a bit of yoga.

I have always loved the challenge of bodyweight exercises even when I was using gyms regularly. I dont fancy joining another gym and wasting the money and my time with posers etc..

I have a diary and I will write down everything I eat, honestly, as well the exercises I do. I full intended to start on Monday but this site has motivated me to start today.

I work normal hours 8 am until 4 pm but my shifts can change at very short notice and I am sometimes kept on at work for long hours which destroys eating plans. My job is mainly sat in a car or at a desk. However as I only live two miles from work I often jog or cycle in.

However today I went out to my local park intending to do one of the workouts I had read on this site. I ran about 1/4 of a mile then attempted the following all without any rest between.

2 circuits of:
press ups x10
pull ups x10
burpees x10
bodyweight squats x10

I managed all the first time around but only did 6 burpess (the hardest exercise in the world . I have never liked them but I know they are good for you!) finished off the other 4 with about a two second rest then did the squats and jogged very slowly home.

I have never been so tired and gasping for air after just 15 minutes of exercise but I felt it had done me some good. 4 hours later I feel great and still feel motivated enough to have a go tommorrow.
Have I started correctly? I won't bore you with what I have eaten today but I dont feel hungry now.

My plan from Monday is get up at 6am for half an hours yoga, mainly 10 rounds of sun salutation after warm ups, then eat a light breakfast, porridge is the best. Run or cycle into work on alternate days. Then when I've finished hopefully at 4pm home to do a bodyweight workout. This will fit in with usual child duties and leave time for golf and pracitising my guitar my other love.

Strength has is not too much of a problem I can do level one for about 1m 30 each exercise now, quite obviously stamina and cardio are. I intend to work on the big 9 and keep up the 20 level challenge.

What I am after is any advice or workouts that will obviously assist from you guys.

I don't think I am too old for all of this and can do it given the help from you lot my ambition is to have a six pack by Christmas as I have a large sum of money waged with the wife on whether I can do it.

Anyway sorry to go on a bit and let me know your thoughts.
Thanks for reading

hey and welcome! it's kinda late so i'll reply in the morning to your post..

But Burpees are the way to go for the moment for you, definitely! they will help condition you and help weight loss - so they are a great tool for helping you with your needs.

That workout you tried is great. To make sure you keep losing weight, shorten rest time between sets wherever possible, or add a couple of reps. Not too many though. Strive for harder exercises and variations too!

Btw, you need to balance every push with a pull. You don't want a slumped posture and the strength complements itself. So for press ups, you need supine row. Pull ups, you need a Dip.

Always eat lots of protein, up to 1g per 1lb of BW. Take protein with every meal. Any more questions, just ask.

As I said, I will reply tomorrow when I have more time (I start Sixth form tomorrow! :D)

Welcome to the forum WebboUK!

The workout you posted is a great, if you start a workout and diet log you'll get lots of advice and encouragement from the guys here. And don't worry about your age, I'm 44 also and believe me, you can do anything you want to do if you want it badly enough.

I'm looking forward to reading about your progress. I hope you're not too old, because that could be a problem for me (I'm 53). :)

I've become a big believer in the picture idea. I have 4 different poses that I started taking every 6 months. I space them out so that I take a different picture about every 6 weeks. I find this a big source of motivation for me. I'm constantly thinking about my next upcoming shot and what I need to do to prepare for it.

Good luck,

Rick VV

Thanks for the replies gentlemen. That has motivated me already and I am about to go out in the pouring rain now and do it all again. Just a couple of things. Can you tell me how to set up the deit and training log on this forum. I will then gladly post up what I've eaten and the exercises done daily should anyone care!!:-P

Just post what you are doing in the 'Your Training/ Workout Log' section of this forum and others will advise as go along. You can also get ideas from other peoples training that you may want to incorporate into your own training.

Glad to see you are motivated to train. I'm approx the same age as you and also am trying to keep in shape through exercise and sensible eating. This site has a lot of knowledgeable people on it who are prepared to offer advice etc. Very valuable.

Thanks for all the support so far. Aching a touch this morning with the lactic build up especially in my thighs but its a "good" ache as they say.

Is it worth keep putting daily food intake on my training log as I dont want to bore anyone with it and not many others seem to be doing it?

Advice please

Most people here put the most important parts of their training in their logs. For me that doesn't include food, becuase I have a healthy diet that I do every single day, and it's an automatic thing for me. If you feel that you need to track your food for a period of time to find out what works best for you and gives you the most energy, keeps the fat off and the muscle growing, then by all means do so. I'm sure everyone would be glad to look at it and offer anything they can from their own experience.

Thanks Dave.

I know at the moment I need to just cut down and get rid of the fat and I will worry about muscle growth later. i am hoping that one will help the other.

The problem is knowing which foods are best for you personally and I assume that is done by trial and error. I have an idea from health magazines etc and use their recipies mostly as they are good. Mostly my meals like chilli, stews etc are all low fat and from the magaxzines. I also use smoothies from them a lot.

We'll see what happens!!
