What's the general consensus on the chinup/dips stations that you can buy from fitness warehouses or sports stores (e.g Rebel)?

Normally I do these exercises with whatever is around but feel they might be performed better and probably more comfortably on apparatus designed for the purpose.

Do the bolt together type last or are they not worth the money.

Have seen them advertised for anything from $200-$500 (here in Australia).

I used to have one and it was awesome, used it for years..

eventually gave it away and regret doing so

now I used a door frame chinup bar and a medicinal walker for dips..

the downside of the doorframe chin bar is you can not work on muscleup's or any above the bar stuff for obvious reasons

For versatility, size/space, and cost-effectiveness, I'd get a set of rings with straps. You can hang them from anything that will support your weight, and you can do pullups, dips, pushups of a million varieties, rows, muscle-ups, and if you're a stud, levers, crosses, handstands, etc.
I throw mine in a backpack and take them to the park by my house that has a track, and do a lot of my workouts over there with my rings on a tree branch or playground equipment.
They take no room in luggage and don't weigh anything, so you can always take them wherever you go. If you look around, there's a million places to hang them so you never have an excuse.
I have an old pullup/dip station that I never use anymore unless somebody else is over at the house working out with me. I find the rings exercises to be much more difficult and effective.
Mine cost $75 two years ago, but I've seen them since for less than $50.

My $.02

And I use the Ultimate Body Press for dips.8-)
